Why do we worship many Gods in Hinduism ?
This has been a question in my
mind for a long time.
Is one God not enough?
Is there no power to that God to give all boons?
Why idol worship?
Is idol worship necessary?
The spiritual journey taken by me has been very long...I have indulged
in various spiritual practices and studied various scriptures. Learnt many
meditation techniques and vedic scripts.
Here I present the insights gained by me by the divine guidance.
Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life….and its core is
‘Advaitha’ that is ‘I am one with brahma ’ or ‘Me and the divine are the
same’
The Upanishads contain four
sentences, the Mahāvākyas (Great Sayings), which were used by Shankara
to establish the identity of Atman and Brahman as scriptural truth:
·
"Prajñānam brahma" - "Consciousness is
Brahman" (Aitareya Upanishad)
·
"Aham brahmāsmi" - "I am Brahman" (Brihadaranyaka Upanishad)
·
"Tat tvam
asi" -
"That Thou art" (Chandogya Upanishad)
·
"Ayamātmā brahma" - "This Atman is Brahman" (Mandukya Upanishad)
When it is said so in Vedanta , why
then all these worships and Gods?
Now if you ponder the above Vedantas
you might understand it theoretically….for a man in normal life it is not easy
to implement it in his daily work and routine. To make these teachings yours
one needs to have a deep insight, meditate and apply it in all walks of life.
Is it possible for a common man?
But this understanding and knowledge
alone will give ultimate joy and peace of mind. For achieving this one needs to
have
1.
A mind filled with divine thoughts
2.
An unwavering mind which is not controlled by the senses.
Why Many Gods?
Here we take the word God to mean the
ultimate .The supreme being…infinite consciousness
…Primordial divine being….
Now coming to the various forms like
Ganesha, Lakshmi ,Muruga etc., are Devathas. In scientific terms one can
say characterized magnetic domains.
A devatha has been formulated with
certain attributes and has been energized or rather programmed with those
attributes. For example Ganesha- for
removal of obstacles and Lakshmi - for wealth and so on. For manifesting these
attributes the combination of waves ( mind and thoughts) and Vibrations (
Mantras and prayers ) are used. This has been done for ages say some 5000 or
more years.
So it is very easy for a common man
to make use of the powers of these devathas and fill his mind with divine
thoughts, courage and happiness. Praying to these devathas invokes the characters
of the devathas in oneself and removes the negativities .Thus invoking positive
energies and filling ones mind with divine thought is taken care of by mantras
and pujas.
One has to realize
Do we Worship ?
In the real sense I
would say ‘NO’
Hinduism teaches us about becoming
GOD.
So the pujas performed help our mind
to keep away from negativity and progress towards the ultimate goal of self
realisation.
So the ultimate aim of life is not Pujas
but they are one of the tools to turn mind inwards.
